James Charles was born on May 23, 1999, in a small town in upstate New York. From a very young age, James showed a passion for makeup and beauty. When he was just 9 years old, he started his own YouTube channel, where he shared tutorials on how to do your own makeup. James Charles first gained fame on Instagram, when he posted a tutorial on how to do his own makeup for a school dance. That video led to more opportunities in the beauty world and soon Charles had launched his own YouTube channel. There he created both beauty tutorials and vlogs (video logs), which often showcased his life as a high school student and young adult. In 2015, James was chosen as the first male CoverGirl spokesperson. Charles quickly gained a following for his outgoing personality and skill with makeup. He also became known for his unfiltered commentary on subjects like race and privilege. He has since become one of the most popular makeup artists in the world. In May of 2019, James Charles, a 19-year-old YouTube personality with nearly 16 million subscribers, was dropped by CoverGirl, the makeup company he had been working with since 2017. The decision came after months of controversy surrounding Charles' online behavior. In early 2017, he launched his own YouTube show called "Instant Influencer." The show follows James Charles as he interviews other social media stars about their lives and work. He also gives makeup tips and shares his own experiences as a young man in the beauty industry. With the show's success and Charles receives praise for his honesty and willingness to share both his successes and failures. Because of certain controversy the show will not be continuing for season 2, although it performed very well. In 2020, James Charles was part of one of the biggest scandals within the YouTube community. An exchange between Tati Westbrook, Jeffree Star, and James Charles even made headlines. This period goes down in YouTube history as "Dramageddon"
